2014 Ford F150 Tremor: The Ecoboost Sport truck

This one falls into the "see a need, fill a need" category. Ford has shown the 2014 F150 Tremor sport truck that takes pieces from the corporate parts bin to make something special. First Ford adds the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 (365 hp, 420 lb.-ft. of torque) to the F150 short-wheelbase regular cab model which is a first for the two-seat truck. “The new Tremor gives F-150 customers yet another option to drive a highly capable, distinctive performance truck with features typically found only in the aftermarket,” said Brian Bell, F-150 product marketing manager. “Plus, the Built Ford Tough EcoBoost engine is available for the first time in a short-wheelbase F-150.” On the inside, throw in black leather bucket seats with red piping and Alcantara seat inserts, brushed-metal accents, a flow-through center console with floor shifter, a red-stitched steering wheel, and a MyFord Touch® powered by SYNC® infotainment system. The exterior gets HID headlamps and FX Appearance Package features like flat-black accents including unique 20-inch flat-black wheels, stylized bodyside graphics, black badges with red lettering, and Tremor graphics. What you get is a truck with lots of go, fuel efficiency, and unique, sporty styling. Nice combination. This is the kind of truck I'd buy if I needed a stuff hauler and had the room for it (I like the candy-apple red one). The 2014 F150 Tremor will be available this Fall. Mazda shows all-new 2014 Mazda3 - Video

Mada has taken the wraps off of the new Mazda3 compact five-door (sedan to follow later). This hatchback is the latest example of Mazda's KODO design language and the new "3" is a looker. The elongated front end recalls the new Mazda6 and the muscular flanks accentuate the car's "coke bottle" shape. The greenhouse is very  nice (check out the sorta side shot after the jump) with the new 3 getting a longer wheelbase and lower roof to give the car a more lithe, sinewy design. The only misstep I see is that the rear of the car seems a little truncated which is underscored (for me) by the fact that no direct side shots were available. All of the pics make the rear appear longer. It may not be a problem in person but we shall see, although the sedan may solve that problem with its regular trunk. The new 3 gets all of Mazda's SkyActiv bag of tricks with two new engines, a 2.0-liter four (155 horsepower, 150 lb-ft of torque) and a 2.5-liter four (184 horsepower, 185 lb-ft of torque) that will be mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. There is a a 2.2-liter Diesel that has not yet been cleared for US duty and the hybrid model is for Japan only. In keeping with the competition, Mazda has updated the new 3 with all the latest alphabet equipment, like Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Forward Obstruction Warning (FOW), Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), and Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) to name a few. Bose premium audio is available as are leatherette and leather seating surfaces over the standard cloth seats. The Mazda3 has always been about fun driving dynamics and handling and those traits should continue but with better fuel efficiency. The all-new Mazda3 five-door will be available in the late summer, early fall timeline. For more info, check out the releases, pics, and video after the "read more" jump. More to come...

Last month, we got our first official look at the all-new, third-generation, X5 SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle) and now we have US specific info and pricing. As expected, the new X5 will come with the expected engines, the 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo Inline 6 that produces 300 hp, 300 lb.-ft. of torque (X5 sDrive 3.5i, X5 xDrive 3.5i), the 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 cranking out 445 hp and 480 lb.-ft. of torque (X5 xDrive 5.0i), and the new 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo Inline 6 diesel engine that uses VNT turbocharging and common rail direct injection to develop  255 hp and 413 lb-ft. of torque. All engines are mated to BMW's excellent eight-speed automatic. The new X5 sDrive 3.5i is the first X5 to offer rear-wheel drive, while all other X5s will feature xDrive all-wheel drive. The new X5 can seat 5 or 7 and is a bit bigger than the outgoing model and features new standard equipment. Luxury and performance options abound and personalization is the name of the game with numerous exterior colors; Luxury Line, M-Sport, and xLine exterior trim options; six interior color options including the new Ivory White and Mocha Brown Interior Design Packages; two premium sound systems (Bang and Olufsen and Harmon Kardon), 20-inch wheels; and much more. The all-new X5 sDrive 3.5i will start at $53,725 (includes $925 destination, + taxes, license, fees, options) and jumps to $56,025+ for the all-wheel drive X5 xDrive 3.5i. With the numerous options and trim levels available, you can spend as much as your heart and wallet can handle. The gas-engined X5s will be available in the late Fall, while the diesel-engined X5 arrives early next year.

2014 Cadillac XTS Vsport unleashed on an unsuspecting public with Twin-Turbo power

Cadillac has released its latest performance sedan the XTS Vsport. In the future, V-Sport models will slot in the Cadillac model hierarchy just below the hi-po V-Series models. Yup, that's just what Cadillac needed, more layers of trim, etc. Anyway, on the XTS the Vsport pieces can be added to Premium and Platinum level vehicles. The XTS Vsport gets the new 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 410 hp and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. No transmission was named, but my guess would be the six-speed automatic that graces all XTS models. The mid- and top-tier XTS trim levels come with most of Cadillac's good stuff, like leather, power everything, CUE infotainment, premium audio, Magnetic-ride control, and more with Vsport models adding the twin-turbo V6, 20-inch wheels, a unique grille, and all of the upgraded pieces to handle the extra power. No word on the availability of all-wheel drive. The "base" XTS is priced at $45,525 (including destination) and clicking the Vsport box on the order form will set you back $63,020 (+ taxes, license, fees, and options). The XTS is a good-looking sedan (even better than pics) that is a place holder until Cadillac makes a true S-Class and 7-Series competitor. The new XTS Vsport model is icing on that cake. The 2014 XTS Vsport will be available later this Summer.

The Fiat 500L MPW - Fiat Living large

Just as we are about to get the larger 500, the 500L, Fiat introduces the next thing in 500s. With the name dependant on where you live, Fiat will introduce the new 500L Living (MPW or Magic Purpose Wagon in Italy) multipurpose vehicle (MPV) that is basically a stretched 500L that will comfortably seat seven in a vehicle that is the size of a compact wagon (see pic below). People-mover vehicles are very big in Europe and the 500L MPW (I kinda like this name) is the latest entry in the category with some style and flair. The 500L MPW will come in two trim levels, Pop Star and Lounge, that will both be available with 5 or 7 seats. Nineteen different colors and eleven two-tone combinations are available with six interior combos and fifteen alloy wheel and hubcap choices. In other words, personalization and choice are key attributes of the 500L MPW. In Europe the 500L MPW will come with four engines (two gas, two turbo-diesel) and a manual or an optional automatic transmission. If the 500L MPW comes to the US, it would get the 500L drivetrain which isn't offered in Europe, the 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four (160 hp, 184lb.-ft. of torque) that comes mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed dual-clutch automatic. The 500L MPW would make an interesting addition to the Fiat line-up providing US consumers access to seven-passenger vehicles that get excellent mileage when compared to the ever growing minivans available today. It will probably depend on how well the regular 500L is received. Press releases are similar and the pics are fairly high-res, so click away.  More to come...

Early Look: 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid

Honda is releasing early pics and info on the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid sedan which will go on sale in October. The Accord Hybrid is expected to post EPA-estimated numbers of 49 mpg/city placing the new sedan at the top of the mid-size hybrid sedan ratings. While we all know about the hubbub surrounding the Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry and Prius EPA mileage claims (mileage numbers unachievable etc.), one can hope that Honda will have used the time it took to get to market to improve hybrid mileage or that they will revise down the numbers to more closely resemble the "real world." The Accord Hybrid utilizes the all-new Accord's upmarket looks (I always misconstrue the tail of the new Accord with a Hyundai Genesis) with some subtle differences like the blue-accented grille and light lenses, LED daytime running lights, a unique wheel design, a decklid spoiler, and hybrid badging. The two-motor SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Multi Mode Drive allows the Accord Hybrid to offer three different driving modes – EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive to maximize fuel efficiency. The Accord Hybrid will be fitted with all of the safety, infotainment, and tech that hybrid buyers expect for the more "upscale" prices. On a side note, the 2014 Accord Hybrid will be the first hybrid Honda built in Ohio. BTW: no rear-end shots were provided but it looks like the taillight lenses are darkened. More to come...

Here's another one for the Another Car We Won't Get files, the CITROËN DS3 Cabrio. CITROËN's DS3 is a popular "hot hatch" in Europe and the Cabrio model is a folding-soft-top version of the popular runabout. The DS3 competes with premium compacts and sub-compacts like the Mini and others and is considered to be the only true five-seater in the category. In Europe, the DS3 models are available with various gas and diesel engines and transmissions to suit consumer needs and desires. Various interior treatments are available and the DS3 cars are models of personalization (check out the press release). In fact, the soft top comes in black, Infini blue (silver car below) and DS Monogramme (see the black car pics after the jump). The DS3 Cabrio is similar to the soft top on the Fiat 500C providing open-air compact-car fun. The DS3 hatch body (and others) would probably require extensive revisions to become a full convertible making those requirements cost prohibitive, so you get what is basically a really big cloth sunroof with some extras like rear spoilers and a ceiling-mounted console. Some like the extra metal around their shoulders and others don't so, like most things in life, you make your choices. It doesn't hurt that the CITROËN DS3 models are lookers too. Check out the 3-D effect taillights. The detailing on this car is pretty amazing. Check out the intro video posted after the press release, you know, after the jump. Enjoy... BTW: CITROËN has no intention of re-entering the US market so this one won't be coming our way, like fur shure.

Aston Martin Vanquish Volante - Topless Perfection

When you say Aston Martin, images of fast, beautiful cars come to mind and their latest, the Vanquish Volante, is no exception. The car, with its fast-fold power soft top, is visually stunning top up or down (I prefer down). It's 6.0-liter V12 (565 hp), sport suspension (with Adaptive Damping System - ADS), carbon-fiber body, near-perfect 51/49 weight distribution, Brembo Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) braking system, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Positive Torque Control (PTC), and a 0 to 60 time of about 4 seconds means the Vanquish Volante moves just like it looks, stunningly. Even the soft-top tonneau cover was designed for improved aerodynamics. “The aerodynamically shaped tonneau, the proportions of the folding fabric roof, the luxurious nature of the cabin – these elements have been pored over by the Design team, working with our Engineering colleagues, to ensure we deliver the aesthetic appeal for which Aston Martin is renowned around the world,” explained Aston Martin Design Director Marek Reichman. Check out the press release and video for more info, but just know that the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante has it all, looks, speed, performance, leather, electronics, and rarity. With a starting price of $297,775 (+ taxes, license, fees, destination, and options), you won't see one of these beauties on every corner even in Beverly Hills. But if you do see one, you'll remember it. Deliveries begin in late 2013 and early 2014. If you've got the bucks and want to be one of the first, call your dealer and order yours today. Jealous stares will await you if you do...

Volkswagen Taigun concept: A Second Look

At times when I receive emails announcing concepts, etc. from car manufacturers, I set them aside for a later review especially if they don't seem to impact the US market. I got this press release from VW last year and really liked the looks of the Taigun, so I saved it for later and later has arrived. With Ford considering the EcoSport for the US and Buick doing well with the Encore, a sub Tiguan sized "cute 'ute" might make sense for the Volkswagen line up. The Taigun Concept was originally shown in Brazil and showcased VW's 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that makes over 100 hp for outstanding fuel efficiency for a compact 'ute. The Taigun features the family SUV look and goes one step further with aggressive fender bulges that give the vehicle a tough look that belies its size. The rear door handles hidden on the C-pillar are very well done (see side pic after the jump). The interior design is right on for this size and class of vehicle. In fact, the Taigun looks almost ready to go, the release hints at production, and rumors have been swirling about smaller and larger crossovers to be added to VW's portfolio (It would also allow the Tiguan to grow a little in size). Let's hope that the Taigun keeps the flavor of this concept if it does in fact hit the roads. More to come. Now about those names...

Quick Look: 2013 Volkswagen Beetle GSR

Carmakers often roll out niche models to move metal, to celebrate a special date, or as a tribute to the past, and the 2013 (14?) Volkswagen Beetle GSR is a tribute to that model from forty years ago (see pic after jump). The GSR acronym in German loosely translates to yellow/black/racer and the new car fully utilizes the namesake colors. Basically, the GSR is a Beetle Turbo (2.0-liter turbo with 200+ hp and a six-speed manual) with 19-inch Tornado wheels; yellow paint with black accents, striping, and badging; special R Line pieces in and out; and a special interior with yellow contrast stitching, sports seats, the R Line dash pad, leather-covered steering wheel, and more (US GSRs will have a black leather interior). If you like the car but not the colors, the '13 Beetle GSR is also available in “Platinum Grey / Black” which kinda defeats the purpose, buy yellow paint is not everybody's thang. Like it was in the 70s, the Beetle GSR is a limited-edition model with only 3,500 available globally. Yes, you can get the six-speed DSG automanual as an option. The 2013 Volkswagen Beetle GSR can be ordered now at your local VW dealer  for a Fall delivery.

Quick Look: 2014 Toyota Highlander

While we can focus on the latest batch of cars, some of which are quite nice btw, we can't forget about the crossovers or CUVs that fill many driveways. Toyota's Highlander is a mid-size (!) CUV that is important to Toyota and the company's bottom line. Like many vehicles today, the Highlander has grown in this third generation to almost full-size with an upgraded interior that can now be fitted to seat eight. Three drivetrains are available, a 2.7-liter four and a 3.5-liter V6 that are both matched to a six-speed automatic, and the Hybrid model that uses Toyota's Synergy Drive mated to the V6 (EPA numbers and pricing will be released closer to the Highlander's intro late this year or early 2014). Toyota's new Dynamc Torque Control all-wheel drive system is a new option. Expect all of the features you'd expect like leather, Toyota’s Entune™ multimedia system (with optional 12 JBL speakers), a Rear Seat Entertainment system with an RCA coaxial input terminal to allow external devices such as gaming systems, rear parking sonar, Blind Spot Monitor, Lane Departure Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a Pre-collision System, and more. The 2014 Highlander offers new styling that combines the blocky toughness consumers expect, with a sleekness (from the side with a lowered roofline, pic after the jump) that more people are being drawn too. Am I the only one that expects some type of trim piece (chrome or otherwise) between the rear taillights? For more info, check out the release and videos after the jump. More to come...

ACWWG-M: The Euro Best-Selling Ford B-MAX

Here's another one for the Another Car We Won't Get (ACWWG)... Maybe files. the Ford B-MAX. Yes folks, Ford makes lots of different kinds of MAXs (MAXes?), the B-MAX, the C-MAX (which we get in the US as a hybrid-only model), and the Grand C-MAX (which is basically a C-MAX stretched to seat seven). The B-MAX is to the Fiesta as the C-MAX is to the Focus with each sedan providing body structure and engines, etc to the MAXs. The B-MAX has quickly grown to become the most popular small MAV (see second press release) in Europe outselling popular models like the Citroen C3 Picasso, Fiat 500L, and the Honda Jazz (Fit in the US). And that last vehicle is the reason we may see the B-MAX in the US. The Honda Fit is a decent seller for Honda and the Fit EV is selling out since Honda lowered the lease pricing. The B-MAX has a lot going for it like the Easy Access Door system that combines a hinged front door mated to a sliding rear door with no B-pillar, making entry and exit extremely easy for a sub-compact (see pic after the jump). It is also a decent-sized vehicle which offers all of the premium features consumers have come to expect like MyFord Touch infotainment, EcoBoost engines, Titanium trim levels, and more. Imagine the B-MAX with the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost three cylinder engine (2012 International Engine of the Year), or with a hybrid drivetrain, or as an EV. If Honda can sell lots of 'em, why not Ford. The unique door system has passed all of the European Crash Test Standards so meeting US standards should only require minor adjustments. If Ford is considering the EcoSport small SUV for the US, why not the B-MAX? For more info, check out the above links, as well as the press releases and general video after the jump

All-new BMW 4-Series Coupe revealed

A new BMW is often a cause for genuflection from the BMW faithful, but a new sport BMW is cause for celebration. So celebrate enthusiasts, your latest focus of desire has arrived...the BMW 4-Series Coupe. While we've seen the pre-production concept version, here is the 4-Series Coupe in production form. In the US, we will see the 2.0-liter turbo four (242 hp - 428i) and the 3.0-liter turbo six (300+ hp - 435i) from the current car along with the six-speed manual or optional eight-speed automatic. All-wheel drive will be available with certain engine/transmission options. Similar to today's 3-Series models, the new 4-Series can be had in base, Sport Line, Modern Line, Luxury Line, and M Sport package trim levels meaning you can spend as much as your desire and can afford. The 4-Series has the latest versions of BMW goodies like ConnectedDrive, iDrive, heads-up displays, navigation, and more. In Europe, there are several diesel engines available, but the only one even hinted at for the US is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo diesel (254 hp in the 430d and 309 hp in the 435d). The upcoming M4 is expected to feature a twin-turbo six that will create between 400-450 hp. The 4-Series Convertible reportedly keeps the folding metal roof and will debut towards the end of the year (possibly at the LA Auto Show). We won't see the new BMW 4-Series 'til late this year or early next year in the US, but Europe should get their hands on this latest Bimmer in a few weeks. For more info, check out the press release, five pics and two videos after the jump. BTW: Did you notice the venting after the front wheel? It is functional and helps brake cooling and aerodynamics...

2014 Cadillac CTS moving on up in size and price

Cadillac's 2014 CTS mid-size luxury performance sedan is a stunning example of what's possible when a car company understands that good-looks and sexy surfaces sell. Since the introduction of Caddy's ATS, it was a forgone conclusion that the new CTS would move on up in size class and price, and it has. “CTS has always been Cadillac’s centerpiece, and as our brand expands and elevates the car properly, (it) grows to its true place” said David Leone, CTS executive chief engineer. “With last year’s addition of the award-winning ATS compact luxury sedan, CTS will directly challenge the luxury midsize competition with uncompromised performance, luxury and technology.”  The new CTS is almost five inches longer than its predecessor and almost 300 pounds lighter and has more than 20 new features to further solidify the the CTS' position as a BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class competitor. Prices for the 2014 CTS standard model will start at $46,025 (+ taxes, license, fees, options - includes $925 destination)  with three optional trim packages or "Collections"  available: Luxury, Performance and Premium. All CTS models will be offered with either the 2.0T turbocharged four (277 hp) or the optional 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 (306 hp) with either rear- or optional all-wheel drive. The high-performance CTS-Vsport model will be available (probably after intro) and will set you back $59,995+ (includes $925 destination). The CTS-Vsport features the new Cadillac Twin-Turbo 3.6-liter V6 engine (SAE-certified 420 horsepower) and a “track” drive mode for the Magnetic Ride Control and also includes an electronic limited slip differential and eight-speed automatic transmission in rear-wheel drive only. Cadillac's CUE infotainment system, an 11-speaker Bose premium audio system, Brembo brakes, and much more are all standard on the new CTS. Cadillac seems to have another winner on its hands. The all-new 2014 CTS will hit dealer showrooms this Fall.

Quick Look: 2014 Kia Cadenza

KIA has taken the wraps off of their new flagship sedan, the 2014 Cadenza (insert credenza jokes here). The Cadenza is another styling hit from KIA that does have a bit of the "I think I'm a BMW" going on in the front and "I think I'm a Lexus" going on from the windshield back. If  you've seen the commercials that just started running (see it after the third release after the jump), the black Cadenza is stunning. The Cadenza offers V6 power (293 hp, 255 lb.-ft. of torque) mated to a six-speed automatic with plenty of standard features and two main options packages, Luxury ($3,000) and Technology ($3,000 - must have Luxury package). A white interior package (above right) is available on Cadenzas with both the Luxury and Technology packages. Prices start at $35,100 (+ taxes, license, fees, options, destination - $800) and include scheduled maintenance for 36/mos or 37,500 miles (see third release). KIA's Cadenza is a good-looking premium full-size sedan that should be considered by folks looking at the Toyota Avalon, Chrysler 300, and other full-size luxury and near-luxury sedans. For lots more information, check out the numerous releases; overviews; spec, options, and pricing charts; and two videos interspersed with the releases after the jump. Enjoy...

Nissan's New York City Taxi of Tomorrow edges closer to the streets

Nissan brought the latest (last?) prototype of the NV 200 Taxi of Tomorrow for officials, drivers, and owners to check out and give final input. "Seeing the nobs and buttons put in place, seeing the screen where it is, seeing the whole thing come to life is really exciting. And that was just sitting in the back seat. When we started rolling, it really came to life," said Andrew Salkin, deputy commissioner operations, NYC Department of Finance. Check out the video for a glimpse of future taxis which shows what is possible with purpose-built vehicles. Inside the cab, the roomy back seat area is nice as are the crash-tested partition with video screens, USB ports, and anti-microbial fiber covers on the seats. The Nissan NV200 NYC Taxis of Tomorrow are scheduled to hit New York City streets this fall. Now if they can get past the recent court ruling...

Fiat 500 and 500C by Gucci make an updated encore appearance for 2013

Fiat's 500 and 500C got the Gucci treatment in its first year and, due to customer demand, the Gucci 500 is back for 2013. The 500 Gucci does have some updates like the blackened headlights and the availability of a Nero (aka black) interior (see pic right). The Gucci embellishments are there like the Gucci stripes on the flanks on the 500 (black car), on the fabric roof on the 500C (while car), and on the interior. Fifteen-inch chrome wheels and Gucci script round out the visual enhancements. The 500 Gucci models also feature higher-quality leathers and other materials. The two-tone interiors are available once again with the Gucci Nero (black) exterior color getting an interior detailed with Bianco/Nero seating and accents, while the Gucci Bianco (pearl white) exterior color features the reciprocal Nero/Bianco theme. The limited-edition 500 by Gucci models start at $23,750 (+ taxes, license, fees, options, and destination - $800) with the 500C (cabrio) by Gucci starting at $27,750+. The 2013 Fiat 500 by Gucci models are starting to arrive at your local Fiat studio this month. For more info, check out the press release as well as the previous post from August of 2011 (which has other pics of the 500C's roof).
