Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge speeds to life - w/videos

The Infiniti Q50 is a good-looking premium mid-to-large sized sedan that reflected Infinit's intentions and aspirations when it was released about a year ago. The Q50 is a high-style, performance sedan that doesn't scrimp on luxury or efficiency. There are many ways to outfit your Q50, there's even a performance hybrid, and the Eau Rouge concept hints at a possible next step for Infiniti's Q50. Think of it as a Q50 on steroids or a Nismo Q. Whatever moniker you choose, the Q50 Eau Rouge stuffs a 560-hp, twin-turbo V6 (GTR anyone) that is mated to a seven-speed transmission with all-wheel drive for a run to 60 in under 4 seconds. Top speed is estimated at about 180 mph which would make the Q50 Eau Rouge not your grandmother's sedan. Think AMG or BMW M. And that could be the point of this give the Germans a run for their money. The Q50 Eau Rouge is a fine-looking automobile with a body kit that isn't overdone, large attractive wheels, nice carbon-fiber accents, great paint, and a racing-inspired interior treatment. The Q50 Eau Rouge concept has been slowly rolled out by Infiniti at the Detroit and Geneva shows. Who knows, maybe the production version will be the next one to pop out from behind the curtain. Press Release:
Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge roars into life - 560-hp engine revealed

  • Twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 gasoline engine, 7-speed gearbox, all-wheel drive
  • Power output of 560 hp and 600 Nm of torque
  • Q50 sports sedan to receive 2.0-liter turbo charged gasoline engine in Europe
Infiniti has boosted excitement in the high-performance premium sports sedan segment at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show by revealing a powerful engine for the Q50 Eau Rouge concept. The beating heart of the Eau Rouge – a twin-turbocharged, 3.8-liter V6 gasoline engine – was revealed on the Infiniti show stand today.

The Q50 Eau Rouge – a high-performance concept car based on the premium manufacturer's award-winning Q50 sport sedan – was first revealed at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show in January as a Formula One inspired, carbon fiber aero-enhanced concept. Q50 Eau Rouge now tells a compelling power story with a full 560 hp and 600 Nm of torque on demand.

"Building on the extremely positive feedback on the Q50 Eau Rouge at its recent Detroit Auto Show launch, we decided to further whet the appetite of performance sports sedan fans by engineering this powerful heart into our blood-red beast," said Johan de Nysschen, president of Infiniti Motor Company Limited.

"A car with such pronounced styling treatments demands the very best in terms of high-performance powertrains, which is why we installed this V6 twin-turbocharged, 7-speed combination as an example of what a potential powertrain for the Q50 Eau Rouge may look and sound like."

The 3799cc V6, 24-valve, twin-turbocharged gasoline engine partners a full-time, all-wheel drive system with 50/50 front-to-rear torque split. Predicted acceleration of 0-60 mph in less than four seconds and a top speed close to 180 mph would put the Q50 Eau Rouge firmly into the premier league of super-sports sedans.

The most powerful and exhilarating gasoline-powered Infiniti model has not been confirmed for production, but the unveiling of the latest iteration of the Q50 Eau Rouge in Geneva underlines the company's determination to create engaging performance cars for a premium segment.

Press Release:
Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge: Muscular, Purposeful, Refined
  • Q50 Eau Rouge concept provides a glimpse of Infiniti's design prowess for high-performance vehicles
  • Exterior features Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula One design influences
  • Q50 Eau Rouge hints at future powerful product line
The Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge, revealed at the 2014 NAIAS Detroit Motor Show, is a concept car that expresses Infiniti's design vision of a high-performance Q50 premium sports sedan.

The Q50 Eau Rouge embodies the arresting design features of the Q50 premium sports sedan - infused with the enticing spirit of Formula One.

Featuring bespoke aerodynamic carbon fiber bodywork, Q50 Eau Rouge is lower and wider, possessing genuine road presence. This striking design is inspired by muscularity, aerodynamics, refinement, and understated power.

"If we built this car I would expect it to feature over 500hp and 600lb/ft of torque. Through our various alliance partners we have access to a range of engines featuring this performance capability which, with a fair amount of engineering effort, can be developed to exhibit Infiniti character and accommodated within the Q50 engine bay. The engine we are evaluating for the Q50 Eau Rouge is a big personality, V-cylinder engine with forced induction. I think our engineers have been waiting for a project like this," said Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti Motor Company Limited.

Hints at powerful intent
The Q50 Eau Rouge was born out of competition at the very pinnacle of motorsport, mirroring components from the successful RB9 race car.

Almost every exterior panel is bespoke to the Q50 Eau Rouge, with only the front doors and the arch of the roof pillars retained as standard components.

Q50 Eau Rouge visibly hunkers down with menace and intent. New front and rear fenders extend the current Q50's already broad-shouldered stance by 20mm, while a larger deck lid spoiler creates air-pressure downforce. All of this dynamic width is wrapped in a tailored coat of customized red paint.

Framing the paintwork across the Q50 Eau Rouge's athletic physique is dark-chrome detailing to replace the chrome bright work of the production Q50, darkening the concept's demeanor dramatically.

Q50's signature double-arch front grille too takes the dark-chrome's matte finish, as do the glasshouse surrounds, door handles and deck lid accents. The curving hood is double air-vented as a further suggestion of the capability and purpose of the Q50 Eau Rouge.

"From our shared passion for performance with Infiniti Red Bull Racing grew a collective desire to produce an ambitious and powerful Infiniti Q50 design study. The overall design creates a feeling of refined muscularity," said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti's Executive Design Director.

"The design has a number of distinctive Formula-One inspired touches. In particular, the sculpted front wing assembly and the rear aerodynamic packaging take their cues from the RB9 race car. The rear fog light packaging is unmistakably Formula One.

"The Q50 Eau Rouge is a combination of the seductive lines of the Q50 but with a fiercer design urge in keeping with a high-performance vehicle. The Q50 Eau Rouge is Infiniti to the power of four; like a bull with its shoulder muscles flexed, a bull in Infiniti clothing."

Part of the concept's exterior treatments include lightweight 20-inch forged alloy wheels which fill the wider arches.

Premium interior. Sporting inspiration
Further underlining the sporty character of the design study, the interior was designed to offer command and comfort.

Further precision control is afforded by a high-grip sports steering wheel and Formula One-style paddle-shifters.

Red-infused carbon fiber detailing to the doors and center console complement the exterior style, and dark-chrome again replaces silver-chrome in the red cockpit.

The breadth and depth of capability is self-evident; the Q50 Eau Rouge is a design concept that clearly indicates what Infiniti could achieve if it was to build a performance version of the Q50 sports sedan.

"Performance is a key ingredient of Infiniti vehicles such as the Q50 sports sedan. Our involvement in Formula One provides inspiration and excellence to our designers and engineers. Q50 Eau Rouge provides not only a glimpse of the design language, but also the performance capability of a future special series," de Nysschen added.

Press Release:
Eau Rouge: Renowned for Speed, Commitment, and Courage

For motor sport aficionados, Eau Rouge, the signature high-speed corner of the famed Spa-Francorchamps race circuit in Belgium, is synonymous with daring, commitment and speed.

For drivers, it is the ultimate examination of their skill and courage.

The ultra-fast, left-right-left sweeping Eau Rouge corner has seen some of the most incredible driving feats in Formula One history, and has been a favorite of a number of grand prix drivers down the years.

Taken flat out in a Formula One car at around 320km/h (200mph), this rapid rollercoaster kinks left, compressing the car's suspension - and the driver's body - at its base, then twists right as it fires steeply up hill before coiling left again to a blind crest that demands perfect car placement, confidence and audacity. A howling Formula One car attacking Eau Rouge is a truly breathtaking sight.

"The Eau Rouge corner complex is one of the most challenging and satisfying parts of any circuit in the F1 calendar," said Sebastian Vettel, Infiniti's Director of Performance and four-time Formula One World Drivers' Champion for Infiniti Red Bull Racing.

"The speed through it, the initial compression, extreme lateral G-forces and blind apex, give you a big rush. Get it right and it's incredibly rewarding. But it can also catch you out."

The Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge concept features aerodynamic styling treatments and design elements influenced by Infiniti's partnership with multiple Formula One World Championship-winning team Infiniti Red Bull Racing. This technological influence from the very pinnacle of motorsport directed the Eau Rouge concept's moniker.
