Ford surprises (stuns?) with third-generation preproduction GT supercar - w/videos

If you didn't remember or know, Ford swept Le Mans placing first, second, and third while racing the original GT 40 in 1966. As part of a fifty-year anniversary celebration of the win, Ford is creating an all-new GT supercar whose styling recalls the original, but is filled with the latest technology. Let's get it out of the way, the new GT is simply stunning and an excellent update of the more "retro," second-generation GT that was built to commerorate Ford's 100th Anniversary. Can you say, "long, low, and sleek?" Lucky for us, Ford likes to build amazing cars to celebrate. The new GT uses carbon-fiber, aluminum and other lightweight materials wherever possible to improve performance. The new GT will feature a performance EcoBoost engine (Ford is trademarking EcoBeast) that uses twin-turbos and creates an estimated 600 hp. The rear-wheel drive, mid-engine GT should be a runner and a handler. And that body...I especially like the aero tunnels in the rear that seperate the engine area from the rear wheels (check the videos after the jump for a closer look). Ford also gave the new GT improved doors without the roof cutouts that smacked more than a few noggins when operated. At the recent Barrett-Jackson auction. it was noted that the second-gen GT has held it's value with a couple of low-mileage 2005 GTs selling for more than twice the original price. Investment indeed. The all-new Ford GT will go into production next year and according to published reports, Ford is taking the new model back to Le Mans to do a little racing. Check out the press releases and videos after the jump. Prices are expected to be close to the last car's six-figure price of entry (about $160,000+) and no word on whether production will be capped. Can't wait...oh, and the surprise? No one saw this coming...

ACWWG: Toyota UK offers Rav4 Business Edition

This is another one for the Another Car We Won't Get files, sorta, since we get the Rav4, just not this one...or a diesel engine option. To say that carmakers vary their offerings based on market, is an understatement. Case in point, the new Toyota Rav4 Business Edition that has just been introduced in the UK. Considering the UK tax and vehicle regulations, business folk have become a special subset of the market place with specific needs. To fill that need, Toyota is offering UK customers this new trim level, the Business Edition. The Rav4 BE is a step up from the Active trim level and joins the Base and Invincible levels. Standard equipment includes Toyota Touch 2 with Go (Toyota’s touchscreen-controlled multimedia, connectivity and navigation system, and includes DAB digital radio, Bluetooth, a rear-view camera and access to on-line information and entertainment services, via Toyota’s customer portal), 2.0-litre D-4D diesel engine, six-speed manual transmission, front-wheel drive, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, automatic headlights, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. Running costs are low with combined cycle fuel consumption at 57.6 mpg in the Euro cycle. The Toyota Rav4 Business Edition is on sale now for a starting price of  £23,995 (about $32,000 using current exchange rates) including the UK valuation added tax. For more info, check out the brief press release after the jump (only the top pic is of the Business Edition). It is interesting to see how automakers spec their vehicles for different markets and sort of let's you know what's available... that we don't get.

All-new 2016 Nissan Titan XD full-size pick-up debuts in Detroit - w/video

Nissan used the North American International Auto Show as the backdrop for the introduction of the all-new Titan XD full-size truck. The somewhat Ford F150-esque Titan is a major step forward for Nissan with an attractive entry that should be very competitive. Eventually, the Titan XD will be available in three cab configurations, two frame sizes, with three powertrain offerings, and five grade levels. At launch, the Titan XD will come as a crewcab model fitted with the 5.0-liter Cummins turbo-diesel V8. V6 and V8 gas engines will be available later. Nissan has outfitted the new Titan XD with all of the kit today's truck buyers expect. This truck could be spec'ed out in thousands of ways to meet every need. By using the Cummins V8 diesel at intro, Nissan hopes the new truck will meet the needs of heavy-duty and half-ton pickup users equally. Pricing and full feature lists will be available closer to the trucks introduction later this year. For lots of info, check out the five press releases, pics, and four videos (one press release is of a video nature).

Infiniti Q60 concept previews upcoming production model - w/videos

Infiniti's Q60 Coupe (nee G35/37) is in need of an update and the concept you see here is reportedly 90% of the new production coupe. And what an update it is. The G35/37 has been a very popular model for Infiniti and if these looks make it to production, they've got another winner on their hands. The sleek flanks look muscular and aerodynamic (check out the side pic after the jump) and the front fascia incorporates the latest interpretation of the Infiniiti corporate grille. The tail and rear fascia again look sleek and kinda menacing which is good stuff for a sport coupe. “This I can tell you is about 90 percent,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director. “Many of the things – the front view, the very strong shoulder, the sculpted artistry of the body – this is very close to the production.” Infiniti's new twin-turbo, direct-injection 3.0-liter V6 will reside under the hood and provide the necessary go force. Even the interior looks ready to go although different seats might be needed for base model Q60 coupes. Expect the new Q60 within the next two years and expect all the good stuff (technology, safety equipment, etc.) to be available at introduction. Let's hope Infiniti holds prices close to current levels. Can't wait. More to come... For more information, check out the press releases, pics, and four videos after the jump.

ACWWG: Vauxhall Adam Grand Slam performance sub-compact - w/video

This is one for the Another Car We Won't Get files (maybe?), the Vauxhall Adam Grand Slam. The Vauxhall/Opel Adam is a popular sub-compact in Europe and the Grand Slam version enters the "hot hatch" fray. The Adam Grand Slam uses a GS-exclusive 1.4-liter turbo (147 hp, 162 ft./lb.of torque) that is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The chassis is upgraded to include an uprated compound crank rear axle, uprated springs and dampers, VXR braking system (featuring red bespoke brake callipers), and the Electronic Stability Program (ESP Plus) that can be deactivated at the touch of a button on the center console. Other standard features include LED running and tail lamps, premium Red n' Roll interior, 18-inch alloy wheels, rear-mounted roof spoiler, electronic climate control, dark-tinted rear windows, and much more. Options include IntelliLink infotainment (with Apple iOS enabling use of the SIRI EYES FREE voice control, BringGo app, as well as the Stitcher and TuneIn apps), leather interior, and a multi-colour LED interior lighting package. The Adam Grand Slam's prices start at £16,995 ($26,579 in todays' exchange) and provide lots of fun for the bucks. Remember, UK pricing includes a value-added tax - almost 10% - that wouldn't apply in the US. Why do we care? There have been numerous rumors that the Adam might come to the US as a Buick (the Envision sub-compact crossover is selling well) and the Adam would be specified as a premium sub-compact if brought here. You know, kinda like the Grand Slam. For more info, check out the press release and an Adam S video after the jump. The side view pic and dash pics are from an Adam S model. If you like the Adam Grand Slam, let GM know.

Lincoln releases latest product-update salvo with the all-new 2016 MKX mid-size crossover - w/videos

Ford is working to revitalize the Lincoln brand as GM has (almost?) with Cadillac. The new MKC compact luxury crossover has been Lincoln's first revitaliztion success and the all-new mid-size MKX borrows heavily from the MKC book. Two engines will be available, the standard 3.7-liter V6 (300+ hp) and the new 2.7-liter Ecoboost V6 (est. 330 hp) mated to a six-speed automatic with standard front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. The MKX has been throughly upgraded with new luxury touches, like the optional premium Black Label limited-edition designer themes (see video after the jump), 360-degree cameras, Lincoln Drive control, available 22-way adjustable seats, Revel premium audio, and much, much more. If you get carried away with the order sheet, you'll be able to spec an MKX with all the luxury you could want but at luxury prices. The MKX is a clean design that should attract new customers, especially with the added luxury and design touches. The all-new 2016 Lincoln MKX will hit your local dealer this fall. Lincoln seems to be on a bit of a roll. For lots more info, check out the press release, factsheets, and three videos after the jump. Enjoy!

Toyota updates 2016 Tacoma to compete with new mid-size truck challengers - w/videos

Toyota used the Detroit Auto Show to introduce the updated (upgraded?) 2016 Tacoma mid-size truck. “For the past 50 years adventure-seeking Americans have relied on Toyota trucks to take them places, on and off-road,” said Bill Fay, gvp & gm, Toyota Division. “The all-new homegrown Tacoma is a tough truck designed, developed and built for lifestyles of the young and young-at-heart.” The new Tacoma was designed at Toyota's CALTY center in Newport Beach, California and Ann Arbor, Michigan and will be built in San Antonio, Texas and Baja California, Mexico. The new styling is a nice update of current Tacoma/Tundra design themes with a chiseled front fascia (see beige truck pic from News Press after the jump for a better look) that should more than satisfy the Tacoma faithful and attract a few new takers. Two engines will be offered, the standard 2.7-liter four or the optional 3.5-liter Atkinson cycle V6 equipped with Toyota’s D-4S technology, featuring both direct and port fuel injection. A six-speed automatic is standard, but a six-speed manual is available with the V6. All-wheel drive is optional. The 2016 Tacoma will come in five flavors, SR, SR5, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited to suit your needs and budget. Prices were not released, but will be available before the truck arrives at dealers later this year. For mkore info, check out the press release, pics, and two videos after the jump.

Chevrolet Bolt Concept shows Chevy's EV future - w/videos

Chevrolet surprised everyone at the Detroit Auto Show with the introduction of the Bolt EV Concept. The Bolt is GM's look at an upcoming compact EV that is expected to retail for around $30k (minus incentives?) and have a range of about 200 miles using the latest battery technology. (Tesla recently announced an update for the out-of-production Roadster that increases range to more than 400 miles.) The Bolt looks ready to go into production as it stands and according to reports, the Bolt will see production. We can only hope that the actual car looks as good as the concept (the original Volt concept was watered down for production). The probable production hold up is the availability of the new battery technology. A version of the Bolt should be at your local dealer for the 2017 model year. Interesting. Cute, crossover-esque EV runabout with reasonable range...an EV that makes sense for lots of folks. The Chevy Bolt is just one step towards our non-fossil-fueled future. Check out the press release and three videos after the jump.

Volvo bringing extended-wheelbase S60 Inscription to the US

Volvo is one of the car companies that has become a global player due to the company's recent purchase by a Chinese congolmerate. With factories in Sweden, Belgium, and China, Volvo can produce more vehicles and variation os existing models based on market needs. In China, mid-size, extended-wheelbase sedans are the rage and this is Volvo's answer to that market need. For US duty, the EW S60 will get the Inscription moniker and be positioned as the top S60 model available in Premium and/or Platinum trim. The Premier Inscription gets standard leather upholstery, a sun/moon roof, Linear Walnut trim, silk metal detailing, unique 19” wheels, interior accent lighting, Inscription branded tread plates, and the Sensus Navigation  package. Step up to the Platinum level and you add the full Sensus technology suite, a Harman Kardon premium audio system, dual Xenon lights and the convenience package. Prices have not been announced but expect a premium above the currently available S60 models. All-wheel drive is an option.

The S60 Inscription wears those extra wheelbase inches well with no odd greenhouse proportions. The questions any buyer might ask are, "do I need the extra space and possible luxury compared to the "regular" S60" or "do I just have to have the best?" If you answer yes to either of those, then the S60 inscription is your Volvo. For more info, check out the press releases (3) after the jump.

Ram Rebel rumbles into Detroit spotlight - w/videos

What we have here is Ram's answer to the Ford Raptor. While it doesn't have the Raptor's aggressive looks or off-road cred, it is a good-looking offroader that should find more than a few happy buyers (At first, I thought the grille looked like a snout, but it has grown on me.) The Rebel comes with the PentaStar V6 (300 hp) and the eight-speed automatic as standard with all-wheel drive. Add the HEMI V8 (395 hp) and you get the eight-speed but you can opt for the 4X2 (rear-wheel drive) or the 4X4 drivetrains. The Rebel comes in the crew cab configuration with the short bed (5 ft. 7 inch) only. The interior features vinyl and fabric seats that feature a design that mirrors the tread pattern of the Toyo Open Country A/T tires. Radar Red and Diesel Gray accents highlight the black interior surfaces. If you want to make a rebel yell and cry "more, more, more" (yes a Billy Idol reference), options include a rear-view camera, the HEMI, two-tone paint, a tri-fold tonneau cover embossed with the Ram logo, and more. For more info regarding the truck's transformation from Ram to Rebel, check out the fairly informative press release and two videos after the jump. The Ram Rebel goes on sale the second half of 2015.

Buick Avenir concept points to possible "future" full-size flagship model - w/video

This is a stunning concept, let's get that out of the way. If only Buick's cars looked this good now. The Avenir (French for future) makes a lot of sense though. Buick could use a flagship model and GM needs to spread development costs around for Cadillac's new flagship, so... The Avenir has it all, looks, features, infotainment with 4G LTE and WiFi, all-wheel drive, looks, luxury, looks, personal seating for four, looks, driver-recognition features, and much more. While some things might change for production (like the 21-inch wheels), the Avenir as it sits would make a great top-of-the-range model and would sell well in Europe and China. Check out the press release and the B Roll video after the jump. Did I mention that it looks really good...especially in the video?

Hyundai gallops the Santa Cruz Crossover Truck concept into the Detroit Auto show - w/video

Well this one came out of left field. Hyundai brought the Santa Cruz Crossover Truck concept to the Detroit Auto Show. Is this a Hyundai crossover with a chopped roof and a pick-up bed? Dunno, but the Santa Cruz is a good-looking what-ever-it-is. Maybe it's more like a modern day El Camino or Ranchero. The press release sort of "calls out" previous trucks like Chevy's Avalanche for being such a compromise that it doesn't really do anything well. The Santa Cruz is a four-door with two front-opening rear "suicide-style" doors that allow ease of entry while maintaining the concept's style. I gotta say I can do without the yellow accents though. The 2.0-liter turbo diesel would provide sufficient power with excellent (for a truck) fuel economy and the all-wheel drive system would take you pretty much anywhere a "soft roader" might want to go to. It is an interesting possible entry into today's marketplace that might just find a few takers. We shall see. Check out the press release for a few specifics regarding the Santa Cruz's features.

Acura NSX shows its production hybrid supercar self in Detroit - w/video

Acura has finally, finally revealed the production version of the all-new NSX hybrid supercar. This Candy-Apple Red beauty is more akin to the Porsche 918 than the first generation car that was described as a half-price Ferrari (there is a story that goes with that statement). What makes this a supercar? How about a lightweight body that is pushed through the air by a  twin-turbocharged 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and three-electric motor Sport Hybrid system for starters. The NSX's front wheels are driven by twin independent high-output electric motors which deliver instantaneous torque response and dynamic left-to-right torque distribution, not to mention all-wheel drive. The NSX's dial-operated Integrated Dynamic System features Quiet, Sport, Sport+ and Track modes where the system adjusts engine, motor, transmission and chassis response, as well as the engine sound level, based on the needs of the driver and driving environment. The power and performance numbers haven't been revealed, but they should be class competitive. The original NSX wasn't the fastest car in its class, but it was a blast to drive and it was reliable unlike many of its compeitors of the day. The new NSX will be assembled in a new facility in Marysville, Ohio and production should begin soon. Let's hope dealers don't jack up prices like they did with the first-gen NSX. Fairly informative press release, pics, and video after the jump. Enjoy!

The all-new F150 Raptor is Ford's Latest, most-capable Armageddon mobile - w/video

The Ford F150 Raptor is my vehicle of choice for major emergencies like the end of the world or Armageddon. There are few, if any vehicles more capable than Ford's go-anywhere Raptor. With it's race and Baja 1000 tuned suspension (with Fox Racing Shox), stiff steel frame, new high-performance EcoBoost engine (more horsepower than the current 6.2-liter V8), ten-speed transmission, and the new (lighter) military-grade aluminum body, the new F150 Raptor is an improvement over the old (er) model in just about every way. The new Raptor's styling is an evolution of the old model but based on the new 2015 F150 and probably the best looking F-series truck you can get. As before, the Raptor is wider (6 inches) than the standard truck with increased ground and departure angle clearances. More specific information will be provided closer to the model's introduction in 2016 (as a 2017 model). Can't wait and I'm sure the purchase line will be long as it has been for the current truck. Check out the available info in the press release, pics, and video after the jump.

Alfa Romeo takes a little off the top of the new 4C to create the 4C Spider - w/videos

The 4C Spider joins its Coupe sibling in the Alfa Romeo line-up in the US (yes, the Coupe is on sale) and will be available this summer. For Spider duty, Alfa cuts the roof off of the lightweight carbon-fiber and aluminum 4C body and provides a carbon-fiber lift-off panel for bad weather driving. The 4C is the sports car that proves that lightweight is just as important as engine power, but this combination provides superb handling and performance. The 4C Spider uses the same 1.75-liter turbo four (237 hp) mated to the paddle-shifted Alfa TCT (twin-clutch transmission) as the Coupe and adds the Alfa DNA selector that has four driving modes (Dynamic, Natural, All-Weather, and Racing) that adjust performance and handling. The transmission has an "auto mode" when the DNA is set in Dynamic, Natural, or All-weather. Performance? How does a 0 to 60 time of just over 4 seconds on the way to a 168 mph top speed sound. The handling numbers are 1.1 g of lateral acceleration and 1.25 g of maximum braking deceleration. Pretty amazing for a four-cylinder supercar, right? And did I mention that the top comes off? Options include Alpine audio, Akrapovic exhaust, various leather combinations, and more. Pricing wasn't announced but the coupe is called the budget Ferrari, so it won't be totally out of reach like many exotics. For more info, check out the informative press release, pics and two videos after the jump. If you want to assure your summer cruising plans, get to your Alfa dealer ASAP.
